This small work, possibly a study for a larger work, appears to be influenced by German modernist Hans Hofmann’s abstract work and his theory of “push and pull.” Art historian Jonathan Fineberg writes in Art Since 1940: Strategies of Being (Second Edition), “Hofmann’s concept of ‘push and pull’ asserts that all movement within a painting necessarily implies a reciprocal movement in the opposing direction; movement into pictorial space demanded a balancing advance toward the viewer.”
